Repairs With Care

Thank you to Tom Wincek and the group from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (JHU/APL) shown here, for helping with numerous projects over the years.

We know personally and from AARP studies that most people (+/- 90%) want to remain independent in their own homes as they age.  Sometimes it only takes a little bit of help to enable someone to live safely and independently.

Our volunteer members make hundreds of small repairs every year to maintain seniors' homes. Handymen/women fix leaking faucets, change storm windows and screens, patch masonry, repair light fixtures, and build railings and ramps, among countless other tasks.  Most projects are small and can be accomplished in a short period of time. Occasionally, we undertake bigger projects and need several people and professionals to get jobs done.

We always need people with building skills AND funds for materials.  Please consider supporting this effort.  If you or your company can help, call Robbie at 410.544.4800 and see Jobs To Do for a list of projects to be matched.

 * TAX CREDITS *  We have been awarded $35,000 in Community Investment Tax Credits.  The DHCD-sponsored Tax Credit program provides additional incentives for businesses to support our nonprofit work.  Read the CITC summary and reduce your tax liability while benefiting the community.  Any company registered in the State of Maryland can participate. Call for more information.

- To help prevent elder abuse in home repairs, we can offer a list of fully-vetted contractors and vendors to provide good work at fair prices.
- Two PIC employees received CAPS  training (Certified Aging in Place Specialist).  We advocated for Universal Design and Visibility elements when possible to makes homes easier to live in and more accessible.

Kudos to Handyman Jim Fleming for this creative solution!  Previously, the heavy oxygen equipment's small wheels got stuck in the homeowner's thick carpet.  Jim built this sturdy cart in his shed. It has bigger wheels, a sturdy handle, and is easy to maneuver.   Scroll down to see the before and after pictures.
